We are aware that a number of British nationals have been detained in Thailand in recent weeks for attempting to export cannabis illegally. On 17 June 2026, Thai Customs introduced a new penalty of 30,000 baht (approximately £680) per kilogram of cannabis seized. If you are unable to pay the fine, you will be detained and may have to serve a long sentence in Thailand. Do not carry cannabis or any package on behalf of someone else when travelling.
